Avalanche Skills Training 1
In an AST 1, you’ll learn how to recognize avalanche terrain, understand the avalanche forecast, plan your trips, and perform a companion rescue.
This course is for backcountry skiers and split boarders with there own equipment and novice-expert riding skills. We will move through avalanche terrain and hopefully make a few turns!
Your instructor:
I am an ACMG ski guide and professional member of the Canadian Avalanche Association. I’m also an avalanche forecaster. I grew up in the Canadian Rockies and have been backcountry skiing for over 30 years. I’ve worked and played in the White Pass for over 15 seasons.
What you will learn:
Avalanche formation and release.
How to identify avalanche terrain.
The basics of trip planning.
How to use the avalanche forecast to mitigate your avalanche risk.
Using appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain.
Intro to companion rescue

Group 2: Dec 11th and 12th 6-10pm Classroom Whitehorse, Dec 15 White Pass
What you need:
AT, tele skis OR splitboard - skins - poles - boots - avalanche transceiver - shovel - probe - backpack - layered clothing system for an active day - warm jacket - helmet - goggles - gloves - small first aid kit - passport or ID - lunch and snacks - water and warm coffee or tea
